Twelfth Night, or What You Will
1.1 - Orsino fell in love with Olivia at first sight, but she is in mourning for 7 years over the death of her brother
20 - Orsino goes on about how he fell in love with Olivia at first sight
25 - Valentine returns to tell Orsino that he was not admitted to Olivias house but that one of her maids did tell him she was mourning for seven years over the death of her brother.
1.2 - talk of Orsino and Olivia and Viola asks to be presented as a male
Viola is talking with the few sailors who survived the wreck of their ship with her. She is hoping that her brother also survived.
40 - the Captain tells her about Olivias mourning. She asks the captain to present her to the Duke (Orsino) as a eunich
1.3 - Maria criticizes Sir Toby over his drinking and his choice of Sir Andrew as a companion
Sir Toby comes home late and is told by Maria that Olivia doesnt like it when he comes back late and that she doesnt approve of his drinking and hanging out with Sir Andrew Augcheek
45 - Toby tells Andrew to greet Mary (his niece Olivias servant) and Andrew (being drunk?) thinks he means he should hit on her
50 - Toby goes on about how she (Olivia) wont have anything to do with the count because she will not marry above her station
They joke around a bit about dancing and talk about going out and drinking
1.4 - We see Viola as Cesario a rapidly favored attendant on Orsino and him asking Viola to go woo Oliva for him. She lets us know in an aside that she would marry him if she could.
Viola enters as a man - Cesario
Valentine comments that it is amazing how quickly Cesario (Viola) has fallen into the Dukes confidence - Viola uses the word "love."
12 - Orsino comments that he has opened his heart to Cesario (Viola) and commands her to go to Olivia to woo her for him. She/he doesnt think it will work but Orsino assures Viola that his youth will help him -- he then goes on to comment on how woman-like her features and voice are and promises Viola freedom if she is successful
40 - Viola agrees to go but comments in an aside that she would marry him if she could
1.5 - Feste tries to make Olivia happy but fails. Viola arrives as a messenger and has her persistence rewarded with an audience with Olivia. She then tells of the Dukes love, but Olivia will have none of it and sends him (her) off. She does, however, invite her back the next day as she ends up taking a fancy to him.
Feste the fool enters and teases Maria. Olivia then comes in and tells him to go away. He assures her that he can be a good fool and she tells him to try as she has noting else to do. He then proceeds to ask her questions trying to cheer her up.
59 - he says he thinks her brother is in hell to which she responds that she is sure he is in heaven. he then says she is the fool for mourning in that case.
71 - Malvolio says he finds Feste inappropriate and Olivia tells him that it is just his self absorption and that he had better lighten up a bit if he is to appreciate life.
90 - Viola arrives and Olivia bids Malvolio do anything to get rid of him if he comes with another suit from the Count
100 - Sir Toby enters drunk -- Olivia is disgusted and asks him about the visitor -- she then sends Fete off to take care of Sir Toby
120 - Malvolio returns to say that the man has not left and will not take his excuses or no as answers. When asked what kind of Man this visitor is, Malvolio replies that he is not quite a man, but older than a boy -- she decides to see him
150 - Olivia wears a veil and Viola asks which is the lady of the house lest she waste her carefully memorized speech on the wrong person
**163 - Olivia swears that "I am not that I play." a reference to the fact that she is not as she appears -- this gets Olivia to reveal herself
230 - Viola begins to deliver her message and Olivia says no, but Viola points out that were she so in love the answer no would be unintelligible
248 - Olivia asks Viola what her parentage is and she replies that it is above her fortunes (as she was shipwrecked) but that her social state is well. Olivia then sends her off with the answer no, but with the caveat that she may return, obstensively to tell her what the Counts reaction is -- but she admits that she is falling in love with him/her and tells Malvolio to go give Viola a ring and to return the next day, but not to get Orsinos hopes up. (She toys with the idea that the messenger is Orsion.)
2.1 - We meet Sebastian (Violas brother) and Antonio who saved him. They head off to Orsinos court.
Sebastian (Violas brother) talks to Antonio and says he must leave as his fortune does not feel right -- but he admits that he is from a renowned family and that his sister was drowned in the same ship wreck from which Antonio pulled him.
35 - Sebastian leaves to go to Count Orsinos court - Antonio says that he has many enemies in the court but that he loves Sebastian so much that he will follow him there.
2.2 - Malvolio gives Viola the ring -- she refuses it, but ends up taking it.
Malvolio finds Viola and delivers his message and the ring, which Viola promptly refuses. **giving a ring as a sign of marriage?**
Viola realizes that Olivia has fallen in love with her and goes on about how terrible this is, how weak women are, and that she has no hope of figuring it all out.
2.3 - Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are making fools of themselves in a drunken manner when Malvolio comes down to tell them to shut up or leave. Maria comes up with a plan to get back at him by leaving love letters for him which look like they came from Olivia.
Sir Toby is talking with Sir Andrew about life and drinking
40 - Feste sings them a love-song for six pence each
80 - Malvolio comes down and tells them to shut up or get out -- actually, he tells Sir Toby that he must either get rid of Sir Andrew or get out of the house.
125 - Maria tries to get on their side by saying that she will try to calm him down and that she will play a trick on him by dropping off love letters which he will think are from Olivia
2.4 - Orsino speaks to Viola of love and bids her go and woo Olivia again. Viola asks him if another could love him and he assures her not. He then asks her about who she loves.
15 - Orsino tells Viola (as Cesario) of love and notes that she appears to be in love and talks to her about it.
50 - Feste sings a love song for Orsino
80 - Orsino tells Viola to go off to woo Olivia again -- Viola asks but what if she can not truly love you? must there not be another who can -- to which he responds no. He tells her not to compare the love a waman can feel to his own as a man can feel much stronger emotions -- Viola says "but I know what a woman feels" and then qualifies it with a description of a sister -- she goes on to say that men may make more outward noise about their love but that that of a woman is stronger
2.5 - Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, Fabian, and Maria play a prank on Malvolio by giving him a letter which appears to come from Olivia. It isntructs him to wear an absurd yellow outfit and to smile obscenely at her whenever he sees her.
Sir Andrew, Sir Toby, and Fabian (another of Olivias household who had been badly treated by Malvolio) are playing the prank on him
Malovio walks around while the others are hidden talking of how great it would be to marry Olivia -- the others (hidden) comment on how they want to kill him for being so conceited
60 - Malovio goes into detail with how he would handle Toby
75 - he finds the letter and reads it -- it says that he should prepare to assume his place by being rude to servants and by wearing yellow stockings
3.1 - Viola shows herself to be of much wit in her exchanges with Feste and Olivia. Olivia professes her love to Viola. Viola leaves.
Feste and Viola have an exchange in the garden in which Viola points out that she saw him at the Counts house. She holds her wit up to his very well.
41 - Viola comments in an obscure manner how much she would like a man -- a beard
55 - she comments that Feste must be wise in a manner to be such a good fool to various different people
85 - Viola goes off with Olivia alone into the garden. There they talk about Orsino, but Olivia doesnt want to
100 - Olivia tries to get Viola to love her by telling how she dishonored herself by falsely sending the ring off to her.
120 - Olivia, once having been rejected by Viola, gets back into her noble mode and tells her to be off (but with good wishes). Viola then asks for a message for Orsino and Olivia goes back into her love-struck mood.
140 - Olivia professes her love to Viola.
155 - Viola leaves and when she does Olivia tells her to come back as she might change her heart towards Orsino -- yeah right.
3.2 - Sir Andrew is mad at the attention Olivia is giving Viola and threatens to leave. Fabian and Toby convince him that this was just a setup to allow him to prove himself better than her, and that his only rcourse now is to challenge her to a duel. He goes off to write the letter. Maria comes in to tell them to come and watch Malovio.
Sir Andrew is mad because his cousin (Olivia) is heaping more care on Viola than on him. He threatens to leave until Fabian convinces him that it is just that she was giving him an opportunity (which he completely blew) to show himself better than Viola.
40 - Fabian and Toby taunt him into challenging Viola to a duel -- but after he goes off to write the letter they comment that they wont deliver it -- they just want to scare him.
60 - Maria enters and tells them to come see Malvolio in his absurd outfit -- he is following the letter to the word
3.3 - Sebastian and Antonio come into town and Sebastian comments on how noble Antonio is to have followed him so. Sebastian wants to go see the sights of the town, but Antonio says he was involved in a naval battle against the town for which he must keep out of sight. They agree to meet at the Elephant inn.
3.4 - Fabian and Toby try to get Andrew to challenge Viola and tell Viola that Andrew is challenging him. Antonio comes in and stops them and confuses Viola and her brother, but her mention of his name gives her hope that he is alive.
Olivia wonders what to serve Viola when she arrives and calls for Malvolio. Maria tells her that he is surely mad -- Olivia notes that that makes two of them.
15 - Malvolio makes a complete ass of himself by quoting from the letter he received of which Olivia knows nothing. Viola arrives and Olivia puts him into the care of the other servants.
60 - Malvolio goes on about how he has her now -- how all her actions point to the one conclusion that she wants to marry him
110 - Toby, Fabian, and Maria discuss how much fun they will have with Malovio now that he is mad (or appears so). They plan to drive him truly mad as it will make the house quieter.
130 - Andrew enters with his letter of threats and Toby reads it. Andrew has managed to say nothing.
165 - Toby decides not to deliver the letter as he realizes that Viola is schooled and will see it as absurd, but instead to pass on the challenge verbally trying to convince Viola of the real threat.
180 - Olivia and Viola talk about love and Viola agrees to come again tomorrow.
220 - Toby and Fabian tell Viola of the challenge and how Andrew is an expert fighter mad with rage. She asks Toby to go off and ask him why he wants to fight her.
250 - They go back and forth telling Andrew and Viola how deadly each other is to get them scared. Andrew says hell give his horse to get out of it.
280 - Antonio comes in and stops the fight. He apparently recognizes Viola as Sebastian, but he is arrested. He asks her for money and she gives him half of what she has, but does not recognize him in return. He does, however, give her hope for her brother.
350 - Toby tries to convince Andrew that Viola was a dishonest turd in having abandoned his friend.
4.1 - Andrew and Toby meet up with Sebastian and confuse him with Cesario. They start a fight which is brought to a halt by Olivias entrance and she takes Sebastian off to her house.
Feste meets up with Sebastian and thinks he is Cesario
Andrew and Toby enter and start a fight with him (thinking he is Cesario). He defends himself hitting Andrew.
40 - Olivia enters and tells Toby and Andrew to be lost. She (also thinking he is Cesario) entreats him to come home with her which he agrees too -- he is falling in love with her
4.2 - Feste makes fun of Malvolio in front of Andrew and Toby, but Toby says to stop as he is already in such bad standing with Olivia.
Feste is made up to be the Parson Master Topas and tries to make Malvolio (who is locked up in the closet) better.
40 - Malvolio asks him to judge his sanity in any reasonable question of logic -- to which he is asked Pythagoras view on wildfowl -- he doesnt agree with it so Feste says he will leave.
59 - Toby says that he is in such bad favor with Olivia that he should bring this game to an end and so asks Feste as himself to do so.
4.3 - Sebastian is asked to marry Olivia
Sebastian comments on how its almost like he is dreaming with Olivia -- he is certain that there must be some deception somewhere, but he knows not where.
22 - Olivia enters with a priest and asks him to marry her now. He agrees and they go off.
5.1 - Orsino and Viola go to woo Oliva. She tells them she is married to Viola. Viola denies it. Andrew and Toby come in complaining that they were beat up by Viola. Sebastian then enters and apologizes for having beat them up and then sees Viola. They confirm that they had the same father and then everyone is happy. Orsino decides to marry Viola and Malvolio is freed. The end.
Fabian wants to see Malvolios letter -- Feste says no
7 - enter Orsino with Cesario to see Olivia
Antonio is brought in and Orsino tells of his piracy -- Viola says he saved her from a battle -- Antonio still does not see the difference between Cesario and Sebastian
93 - Enter Olivia... uh oh...
She tells Orsino that she cannot and does not love him. He tells her that he will then punish the one she dose love (Viola) to get back at her. Viola doesnt mind as she honestly says how much she loves him.
140 - Olivia calls Cesario to her as her husband -- she denies it; enter the priest
180 - Andrew comes in calling for help that Cesario has beaten up Toby -- and then blames Viola. Toby comes in bloody and drunk and blames Viola. Olivia sends them away.
202 - Enter Sebastian! -- They all see the two twins.
Sebastian wants to know who this lookalike is. Viola says he must be some sort of spirit sent to frighten them.
The two of them talk of their father and confirm who they are, but Viola asks him not to embrace her until such time as things have worked themselves out to allow her to appear as a woman again. (Although the others hear)
265 - Orsinio says that from this mess he will take a bride if all of Violas claims of love still hold -- which they do.
340 - Malvolio comes out to complain and Olivia deduces that it was Maria. However Fabian tells them that she married Toby in return and that that is enough punishment.
